This is the first collection of poetry published by Dan Surface. He is a certified 4 Gateways personal coach and as someone challenged by depression an outspoken advocate to eliminate the stigma of mental illness. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

Crystal

Slugged in the gut.
That's what it felt like.
Just a difference of opinion.
But still…
A blast like exploding glass.
Now,
Barefoot on shards,
Sliced through and through.

Tear Down

One day this house will disappear.
A neighbor driving by will see
Splintered wood, broken brick,
Perhaps a window frame,
Driveway to nowhere.
Can you see the back door that never closed snugly
To keep out the winter wind?
Or coming around the scratched corner of oak floor ,
Where dogs and cats sought purchase?
Can you hear the voices of family,
Joy and anger?
They are gone.
To new families, little apartments, death
And a one-day drive by.

The Birds

From the window this colder day,
Starlings forage the front yard,
Until an unknown signal
Lifts their dark ballet to fall
Upon the yard
Across the street.
Then rising again,
Return.
I watch, wondering,
Do they find anything to eat?
Imagine scattering bird seed
In a whirled wind of wings
Engulfing my body, breath,
Until I break
For the door,
Only to be devoured,
Bones and punctured bag
Like tattered lace.
