Contractors To Adjust Oriole Pool Floor To Meet State Specifications At No Cost To Park District

MORTON GROVE, Ill. - Oct. 26, 2017 - PRLog -- The Morton Grove Park District has reached a settlement agreement with the construction company and its subcontractor over a construction error that will be corrected this fall in Oriole Pool. The alteration will be made at no cost to the Park District.

While examining an unrelated issue with the Oriole Pool, Park District officials discovered that the floor of the pool's diving well was not built according to the architectural design and it did not comply with Illinois Department of Public Health requirements.

The Park District contacted James McHugh Construction Company and its subcontractor, Matrix Concrete LLC, who proposed a solution.  The planned changes were approved by IDPH and will rectify the error.  The two companies have also agreed to reimburse the Park District $10,000 for expenses it incurred while investigating this matter.

The Board of Park Commissioners emphasized that at no time prior to the discovery of the construction error was there a safety concern and pool users were never at risk. The specific issue is that the floor of the diving well where the floor meets the upward slope to shallower water.  To resolve the issue, contractors will remove a few inches of material along the base of the pool floor.

While safety was never an issue, members of the Board of Park Commissioners said they were frequently asked about the pool's safety after inaccurate information continued to circulate since the pool reopened in 2014. "People using the pool were never affected by this issue, but we do want the pool to meet all standards, so the Board insisted on the work being done," said Park District Executive Director Jeffrey Wait. "We are glad it is resolved."

The settlement agreement approved by the Board brings the matter to the best possible conclusion.

The pool is scheduled to open next year on Memorial Day weekend.
