Identify plants with an app! Crowdfund campaign launched to help finish building PlantSnap

November 14 - Earth.com has announced the release of a brand new mobile app designed to help users identify any plant, flower, or tree with the snap of a photo. PlantSnap, built for iOS and Android, allows the user to just take and submit a picture of any plant they come across, and the app will tell you what it is in seconds.

Powered by an expansive international database of over 250,000 plants, users can receive immediate results in the form of a wiki-style article for free. Beyond basic identification, the article provides in-depth context, including the scientific name, group, family, and growth habit. PlantSnap also tags when and where you found the plant so that it can update the database on where individual plants can be found.

The app is built with a state-of-the-art, full-image recognition engine and can recognize any known plant on the planet. PlantSnap is intended for use by a wide audience ranging from casual planet enthusiasts, botanists, gardeners, landscapers, teachers, and students.

Currently, in beta, the team have launched a Kickstarter to raise further funding to finish the application development.

Founded by entrepreneur Eric Ralls, the PlantSnap app is built upon a unique algorithm. "We tested the classifier on a limited selection of leaves and flowers," said the development team. "A set of images for each species was divided into training and testing samples. Training sample is used to generate a recognition algorithm for each species, and testing sample was passed to the classifier input. Our algorithm can detect most species with 100% accuracy. So basically we are feeding new, unknown images to the classifier and it's still able to recognize the species by image."
