EL CERRITO, Calif. - Oct. 28, 2016 - PRLog -- James Hilgendorf's "Traveling to a New America" stopped in Berkeley, California today to talk to students on the street about what they feel about their country at this point in time, when there is so much division and chaos in the air.

These were the thoughts of Annemarie, 19, who is studying biotechnology:

Annemarie, what do you think about what's going on in America?

"I think, for the youth of America, there's definitely a need for awareness. I'm 19 years old, and, myself, I've just become so much more aware just within the past year.  Our generation has so much learning to do.

"I feel like the youth of America are in a bubble of America. Even within national or domestic things within our country, I don't feel they're aware of what's going on.  We have so many resources to learn about the inhumane things internationally that are going on around us - but we don't utilize them as much as we should.  Even those of us who are privileged to live in California, we don't realize what's going on in other States, or even in our own backyard.  I feel almost like there isn't even a broader perspective in California.  We'll never be able to completely understand the inhumane things that are going on in other places, because we were never put into those situations, we were never completely exposed first hand.

"We need to understand one another more.  You would think, with the technological innovations and advancement nowadays, we would be more in touch with one another, but I think it has only, if anything, made us more distant."

What would be your dream of a greater America?

"It would be one of acceptance and one that didn't rely on a basis of classes and social ideas that have been built into the country that we live in.  Those are impossible to escape, of course, because of history; but in the grand scheme of things it would be ideal to have everyone accepting one another, getting away from things like racism, where people judge someone by color or pigment of skin."

What are some solutions?

"Educating the greater masses.  We need to capture peoples' attention somehow and get them interested in the importance of broadening their horizons and understanding the greater picture.  A lot of people like to stay in their bubble."

What's your personal dream?

"I have an interest in biotechnology.  I'm thinking about cancer research possibly.  I definitely have an interest in the medical field.  My father passed away two years ago, and I spent a lot of time taking care of him.  I want to live up to that.  I want to do something a little greater, you know.  I want something where I'm able to expand and grow, and not see myself somewhere dead-end.  I want to be able to grow with my profession and contribute to the world."
