It's Father and Son Bonding Time in Gautemala

GUELPH, Ontario - Aug. 29, 2016 - PRLog -- Brent Stiles and his 17-year-old son William are off to Guatemala soon.

We spoke to the duo as they came into the office today to find out more about their story.  Why would you as a busy schoolteacher give up your precious vacation time in order to go on a mission trip?

" I went on a missions trip in 2013 to help paint the nursing school in Nebaj," replied Brent. " We also took donations of clothing and school supplies.  Once there, we took part in visiting people in their homes and taking part in activities for children such as drama, crafts and games.

" I can say it was an amazing experience and that is why I am going back again with William and other members of the youth group from Rockwood United Church. There is also one person coming from our affiliated church Stone United.

" Going on a missions trip with the youth group is exciting. They are aged between 14-17 years and are feeling a bit nervous of going to a third world country.  It's great to be able to organize this trip, as I want them to 'think outside the box' and be exposed to different cultures. "

Brent also volunteers regularly with the homeless in Cambridge and Toronto. He also helps with the meal service near the Cambridge Bus Terminal serving Chili, donuts and coffee to people who are vulnerable.

"I love to meet new people as I see God in people and want to find the good in all." Brent explained.  "Most people just want to be heard and I like listening to their life stories.  I feel it's important and often wonder what happens to them when they move away.  The last time I went, there was a man who had moved to Newfoundland.  I kept praying that he would be safe. "

So what are William's thoughts on going abroad to a developing country?

"I am a bit anxious about the whole thing especially as the time to go comes nearer. It is going to be very different.  You can't just drink water out of a tap, as it's not safe.  I've been to the States and England before, but going to Guatemala will be different.

"I don't think I would have gone by myself but because I know most people from the church who are going, I feel safer."
