Don't Give Up the Computer - Cyber Security for the Lay Person

SAN DIEGO - July 5, 2016 - PRLog -- During World War II, the battlefield extended into the sky and the Marines' Hymn was changed from "On the land as on the sea" to "In the air, on land and sea".

Today we face enemies in space and cyberspace, expanding the battlefield to land, sea, air, space and cyberspace. Our military is preparing for cyberwarfare with new majors in cyber security. The US Naval Academy is on the leading edge of cyber security education and is incorporating cyber studies into its formal curriculum.

All midshipmen are required to take cyber security courses and a new Center for Cyber Security Studies building is underway. Joe Moreno, a graduate of the Naval Academy, class of 93, a former Marine, and former Apple Software Engineer recently published an article on Cyber Security in the Naval Academy's Shipmate magazine, entitled 'Don't Give Up the Computer.'

This exceptional and thought provoking article includes tips on 'Cyber Hygiene' and what we can all do to protect ourselves from cyber-attacks. Included are details on how malware, a common cyber warfare weapon, is used to attack computer systems.

"Cyber hygiene should start from an early age, like the need to wash your hands and brush your teeth," 2ndLt C.R. Johnston '16, USMC states in the article. Cyber hygiene is one of many interesting terms that are becoming part of our digital personas.

We can all benefit from learning more about cyber security and what we can do to protect ourselves. It is encouraging to learn about how the Naval Academy is preparing midshipman to face this invisible and silent threat and how we can better manage our digital emissions.
