This activity focused on building STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills as part of the curriculum, helping the class understand how money multiplies. Students used a number of ideas to grow their seed money, including selling cookies and treats, making bracelets, grooming dogs and collecting items for a recycling center. The third-graders exceeded all expectations, raising just over $1,000 to benefit the Head Start Summer Kindergarten program, which provides 90 children an extra push in STEM curriculum before school begins in the fall. Students enjoyed the project and found it challenging. A student who created tie dye t-shirts said, "I thought it was surprising because we were learning new things without even knowing it! I learned how to make money and how to tie dye!" Another student noted the project's STEM focus. "I think the hardest part was making change for people. But now I am really good at it!" Mrs. Franco was pleased with the students' innovations. "I'm very proud of the dedication and creativity my students showed throughout this project. They were very excited to help other students their age be able to engage in STEM learning." The Head Start Summer Kindergarten program is aimed at low-income families in the community. It helps prepare children for school and encourages parents to engage with their child's education. Families interested in this program can visit http://www.saltlakeheadstart.org for further details.
