PRLog -- Atlanta, GA, (February 22, 2016)-Lyrical Boxing is the original rap battle that started it all. November 8
th, 1999 at the once famed “Studio Central” night-club in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia, Diamond-Cut Entertainment developed a partnership that went on to create “Mic Check,” an open Mic Night featuring poetry, comedy, singing, and the featured emcee/DJ battles. As the popularity of mc battles grew Diamond-Cut Entertainment’
s CEO Robert “Loki” Jenkins was at home developing a new battle style that he wanted to be very different from his competition. This was the beginning of the event known as “Lyrical Boxing.” It served as a way to separate the real emcees from the fake. As the legendary Davie DMX once put it, “Lyrical Boxing is the next best thing since condoms.” “Lyrical Boxing” is the ultimate emcee challenge infusing traditional boxing with the spirit of hip-hop. “Lyrical Boxing” consists of two emcees in a ring, exchanging words back and forth for two minutes. At every competition, 16 contenders battle in an elimination style format. What separates “Lyrical Boxing” from other freestyle battles is, instead of adopting the traditional battle format of allowing each emcee 60 seconds, “Lyrical Boxing” allows each contender four bars (10 seconds) to among other things, absorb their contenders lyrics, the crowd’s reaction and the beat, and respond with four bars of their own. At the end of each “Lyrical Boxing” competition, either a new champion is crowned, or the reigning champion retains their title. Whoever holds the belt at the end of each battle goes on to defend their title at the next “Lyrical Boxing” match.
“Lyrical Boxing” has many goals. One, goal is to bridge the gap the between hip-hop culture and the boxing community. The second goal is to create a mainstream event for underground emcees to display their talent, and the third and final goal of “Lyrical Boxing” is to have each match result in a complete song that captured a moment in time. Many hours, energy, spirituality and the love for Hip-Hop birthed the concept of “Lyrical Boxing” to ensure that the world could enjoy a quality hip-hop event.
