Business Insider Story On Jill Tarter Finding Flaw In Hawking Theory Is Just As Flawed If Not Worse

Jill Tarter is lauded for finding a Hawking flaw in his fear of aliens, by Jessica Orwig of Business Insider, but received a serious rebuke from noted R&D engineer Marshall Barnes., who says she's just as wrong, if not worse.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio - Jan. 24, 2016 - PRLog -- "A world leading scientist on the search for extraterrestrials pointed out a flaw in Stephen Hawking's fear of finding intelligent aliens". This story by Jessica Orwig of Business Insider has raised the ire of Marshall Barnes, internationally noted R&D engineer and creator of the first prototype technology for warp drive, featured in the upcoming film, STDTS:The World's First Warp Drive. Orwig interviews Jill Tarter, co-founder and former director of the SETI Institute. "SETI" is Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Orwig says Tarter discovered a flaw in Hawking's theory of hostile aliens arriving. "Tarter thinks that aliens advanced enough to skip across star systems and reach Earth will be friendly, not aggressive.". This idea though was expressed by scientists like Michio Kaku and Paul Davies when Hawking first made his anti-alien communication statement. However, Marshall also spoke out at that time with the paper, Hawking, the Borg, the Necromongers, Rome, the Nazis, Fringe, FreeJack, Independence Day and the Fallacy of the Drake Equation in which he not only argues it's impossible to know how aliens would act because, after all, they're aliens, but too many assumptions are made without consideration of the aliens ability to invent interstellar travel or the desire to (see http://www.prlog.org/12477339-marshall-barnes-scoffs-at-s... ).

Marshall, who's won recognitions for innovation, is a member of a number innovation organizations and has taught creativity seminars, said, "They're many drivers working against technological advancement - everything from politics, environment, intelligence, war, education, apathy, culture and religion. There's no way to predict which or more would play a role in an alien world of which we can only have the most ignorant fantasies."

Orwig cites Tarter saying, "The idea of a civilization which has managed to survive far longer than we have ... and the fact that that technology remains an aggressive one, to me, doesn't make sense. The pressure of long-term survival — of limiting population ... I think requires that the evolutionary trends that ratcheted up our intelligence ... continues to evolve into something that's cooperative and take on global scale problems."

Marshall scoffs and mocks her.

"If you look at that, how unbelievably stupid this woman is becomes clear. She knows how long they've been around? She assumes they're aliens, so they  know how to get here, be able to and they've been around much longer than we have! What if they're from a place where time doesn't move as fast as it does here because of the mass of their planet or perhaps there is a neutron star or something nearby that causes the same effect? That would skew assumptions she's making on how long they've been around, compared to us. Never mind they might develop faster in less time because they didn't have as many wars. Or, they could live on a paradise planet and not care to ever leave.

"Then," Marshall continues, "she makes all kinds of assumptions about other aspects of this completely imaginary alien society, clearly based on her experience on Earth. I'm ignoring the study Orwig cites because of the statement, 'Yet that taste for warfare has dwindled over the years, with the aid of emerging technologies and innovation.'

"This is what makes me mock her, with her self-centered, unwarranted arrogance. She thinks some study on a primitive society can be used as a measuring stick? Here's one - look how long European civilization was around, having war after war until their squabbling got so huge they engulfed the entire world in two world wars, all along, the technology getting better and better and the innovations constantly being made. By the Cold War, with all the advancements of the 20th century, they could have easily screwed-up and wiped out the world, with her silly self in it."

"This isn't the first time Tarter's made a fool of herself. She was in an UFO ABC News TV special appearing knowledgeable about observers being fooled," Marshall remarked. "She and her husband saw a bright light seeming to approach them flying their small airplane. As it gets closer the clouds clear revealing the moon, which had been seeming to get larger, hence 'closer' as the clouds were dispersing. Of course, she uses her experience to tar that of the string of combat pilots and military air crews who tell their stories of unexplained sightings on the show. None of whom say they saw were aliens but unexplained craft, not just a light like Tarter."

Marshall adds his biting conclusion - "She just proved how clueless she is,  admitting to being so bad an observer she can't tell when an object is getting larger, a 2D movement, versus moving closer in a 3D space".

Marshall adds an amusing anecdote.

"After that special, I met her at a science symposium in 2013 and she was very nice to me. I didn't say anything about my opinion of her, instead just giving her a chance. Well, I don't know what happened, but a year later I saw her again. She ignored me, so I walked right up to her and said, 'Hi! How are you?'. She gave me the most hateful scowl I've ever seen. I just kept smiling and walked away, laughing deep inside. After all, it meant I don't have to be nice now to someone I've had such a low opinion of".
