Miami Cancer Institute Names Three to Executive Positions

MIAMI - Jan. 18, 2016 - PRLog -- Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida has named three professionals to its executive leadership:

- Jeff Boyd, Ph.D., director of translational research and genomic medicine

- Leonard Kalman, M.D., deputy medical director and chief clinical officer

- Michele Ryder, R.N., chief operating officer/chief nursing officer

Dr. Boyd, a renowned expert in cancer research and genetic testing, has a critical role in positioning Miami Cancer Institute’s Center for Genomic Medicine as an international leader for highly personalized genetic analyses tailored to patients’ individual needs. He was most recently senior vice president for Molecular Medicine, executive director of the Cancer Genome Institute and the Robert C. Young, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where he also maintained a research laboratory. Previously, he served as attending biologist and director of the Diagnostic Molecular Genetics Laboratory and the Gynecology and Breast Research Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Dr. Kalman plays a critical role in supporting the overall mission and vision of the Cancer Institute and in defining its clinical components. He is involved in the recruitment of faculty and staff and is working with the operational team to create a multidisciplinary model of care combined with an unsurpassed patient experience. Following the completion of his medical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1982, Dr. Kalman became a practicing community medical oncologist and joined the staffs of Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. As the practice grew under his leadership, he eventually served as the chairman of the Board of Managers of what became Advanced Medical Specialties (AMS), a large diversified oncology practice in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. As chairman, he led AMS’ strategic planning, quality and growth initiatives. In December 2014, the physicians and employees of AMS joined Baptist Health as the founding oncologists of Miami Cancer Institute.

Ryder provides leadership and support for the Miami Cancer Institute’s business and nursing operations along the patient care continuum, including the infusion suites, multidisciplinary clinics, radiation oncology and ancillary services. Her extensive professional background encompasses more than 37 years in both patient care and executive positions. Ryder is a clinical expert in hospital operations and has been responsible for the growth of the renowned neuroscience and surgical programs at Baptist Hospital of Miami, where she began her career 29 years ago in surgery and the post-anesthesia care unit.
