“Elisaveta: A Life” by Gillian Thornhill is published

In 1917, Elisaveta, aged 4 years, is forced to leave St. Petersburg with her parents and younger sister. In company with many others, she becomes a refugee in Paris, via Odessa and Constantinople (Istanbul). Later, stateless and alone, she travels to England.

This story, inspired by reality, traces her struggles and work, her loves and losses, and her development as a human being.

       Down with the Tsar! Death to the Tsar! They yelled ferociously in the icy air. The anticipation of a prolonged and bitter winter had been daunting  to them, many old before their time, looking more like seventy than forty or fifty years old, weak from hunger, with no hope of anything better. Or was there hope? Not with the Tsar, there wasn’t! His despotic indifference had turned so many of them into beasts.”
