CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Oct. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Last October 3, 2015, in lieu of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, people came together at Marshall Park in Uptown Charlotte for one cause: to raise critical funding for breast health education, screenings, diagnostics, and treatment support services.

Susan G. Komen was founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker after promising her sister Susan G. Komen that she would find a way to put an end to the disease that claimed Suzy's life. It is the largest breast cancer organization in the world with a goal to not just to fund breast cancer research but also to provide all sorts of support to breast cancer patients and their families. Since its foundation, Komen has funded over $800 million in research and extended more than $1.6 billion for screening, education, and treatment.

The Susan G. Komen Charlotte Chapter was, on the other hand, founded in 1992 by Penelope Wilson after her partner Annie Wingo died of breast cancer. In 1997, they started the annual Charlotte Race For A Cure wherein thousands of women and their families participated.
