NEW YORK - Sept. 22, 2015 - PRLog -- The United Nations’ Summit on the Sustainable Goals (SDGs) from 25 to 27 September 2015 will usher in the SDGs as the successor to the Millennium Development Goals after a long three-year consultation process.

This will be critical for Africa as well as the rest of the world, as these goals will go beyond those of the MDGs. This is because the summit will look at issues of eradicating extreme poverty, ending economic exclusion, and also at promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, says the Cape Town-based development monitoring organisation, African Monitor.

During this summit, a high-level event convened and hosted by NEPAD Agency as well as the Zambian Government and co-hosted by African Monitor and the Africa Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Working Group, will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Conference room 5, on 24 September 2015.

Says Namhla Mniki-Mangaliso, Director for African Monitor: “This meeting will look at how Africa can fast-track the implementation of the SDGs.

“It’s been a long and hard process, and we’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in the discussions from the beginning. Africa’s involvement is essential.

“The theme of this side event is “How NEPAD Programmes can deliver on the SDGs in Africa” and will cover the importance of regional integration in catalysing national implementation to attain the SDGs with on-the-ground experiences and insights”.

There will be two back-to-back professionally moderated panel discussions covering the topics:

·         Business unusual in development efforts, development financing and public-private engagement to attain success on the Agenda 2063 and SDGs in Africa; and

·         Catalysing change across scales and sectors to accelerate implementation on SDGs: success factors and stakeholder experiences.

Panelists for these discussions include

·         Akinwumi Adesina, President of African Development Bank (AfDB);

·         Archbishop Njongo Ndgungane, President of African Monitor;

·         Naoko Ishil, Chief Executive Officer of Global Environment Facility;

·         Ingrid Hoven, Deputy Director-General of General Issues Germany;

·         Professor John Mugabe, Professor of the Graduate School of Technology Management at the University of Pretoria;

·         Maged Abdelaziz, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Advisor on Africa (CSAA);

·         Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director for World Food Programme (WFP);

·         David Nabarro, United Nations Secretary-General Special Representative on Food Security and Nutrition;

·         Dr Theo de Jager, President of Pan African Farmers’ Organisation (PAFO); and

·         Andrew Steer, President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Resources Institute (WRI).

Members of the media are invited to attend the event at 10h00 on 24 September 2015.

Speakers will be available for media interaction during the event and some of the speakers, such as the Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, will be available on the morning of 25 September 2015 for any further interviews or questions.

Media who do not already have passes, and who wish to attend the event, can apply for one on a first-come-first-served basis on the morning of 24 September between 08h00 and 09h00 outside the United Nations compound.

Says Mniki-Mangaliso: “NEPAD and other African development institutions responsible for implementing continental visions and programmes will have to work with key stakeholders, including African Member States, civil society, farmer organisations and development banks to implement the goals.

"It is therefore essential that agreements on the best mechanisms of forging these new partnerships are reached at this meeting and all commit to an action agenda that will lead to results on the ground”

“We need to know how to do business differently so as to make an impact that will allow Africa to deliver on the SDGs”.

The Post-2015 Development Agenda refers to a process led by the United Nations that aims to help define the future global development framework with SDGs that will succeed the UN Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight global development targets which come to an end in 2015.
