Becker got the idea from her work at Etsy, as she watched a $2 billion marketplace for arts and crafts emerge. It’s her vision to create the same online structure for fresh beans.

“Green coffee is already a $55 billion industry,” said Becker, who knows her coffee. She is also owner of Trabant Coffee & Chai, which remains one of the best coffee shops in Seattle – and reflects her 12-year business commitment to making Trabant a success.

Becker says part of the successful Trabant model lies in its relationships. The growth of Beander is directly tied to their success, and serving their unique needs.

“We are Beander’s first customer,” says Chris Hall, owner of the 40 Acres Coffee startup in Austin, Texas. “As a new small batch roaster, we want to be able to see fresh beans, roast them and market test them. That’s not something you can do with importers who want you to buy ten pallets at a time. You want to have choices. Tatiana is really solving a problem for small batch roasters, and when you’re a startup that’s absolutely crucial.”

It’s crucial for Beander too, because Becker is building a business aligned with industry trends as more roasters move away from the commodity futures market. As they switch to buying direct, the Beander portal is already there to deliver to smaller, high-value roasters who find that the futures market makes no sense in their new business models.

“With us, we’ve spent the last eighteen months sifting the world’s best beans that can be offered spot from small importers or even larger farms,” Becker said. “The Lean Coffee partnership adds more choice, at reasonable cupping points, to sell by the bag or in a container that features Sidamo, Limu and Natural Limu, and Washed Kochere options.”
