Can pain really be switched off?

June 15, 2015 - PRLog -- Scientist  at Cambridge University are very close to be able to bring to the market a drug that is able to switch off pain without any side effects. They have researched those people who were born with a congenital insensibility to pain, which is s rare genetic disorder, and made a discovery about 10 years ago that there was a faulty gene in those who were born and unable to feel pain.

They have established that with a single base change to the DNA of an individual, that they may be able to switch off pain and replicate the position like those who are born not susceptible to pain. For those who suffer from chronic pain, which is a daily occurrence, this could be the difference of enhancing the quality of  life.

Hilton Obery, serious injury solicitor and head of spinal injury at NewLaw Solicitors commented, “Many of our catastrophically injured clients have the legacy of pain that reminds them of their disability and can be a legacy that far out ways the initial trauma.

‘It can be psychologically damaging to wake up every day having the inability to interact with the world and to do simple mundane tasks that are taken for granted.

‘Many have to take medication which can have side effects to try and reduce pain so that pain is less intrusive and find themselves having to take a cocktail of drugs to find some relief but never finding it eradicated. If scientist can produce a drug that has no side effects, and able at the same time to switch off pain, then this will be a spectacular pain killer which will reduce the loss of amenity that many of our clients wish for."
