Follow on Google News | Myers Park Lady Mustangs to be Honored by Charlotte City Council at 6:30 pmThe 29-1 Lady Mustangs basketball team, the fourth best team in America, will be honored by Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter and the Charlotte City Council Monday, June 8 at 6:30 pm at the Charlotte Government Center.
By: Myers Park High School Mustangs The dominance of this year's team is undeniable. The 29-1 team beat every team in North Carolina, winning by an average of 34 points a game. Their only defeat was to Blackman High School at their home court 450 miles from Charlotte in Murfreesboro, TN. (The Mustangs only featured three seniors this year and many newcomers. This game was held early in the season. Interestingly, at one point in this loss, MPHS was called for 12 straight fouls versus none on opposing team). The team ended the year ranked #4 nationally by USA TODAY and repeated as 4A State Champions. The team was invited to play in New York City at Madison Square Garden on ESPN, but were denied this opportunity by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). In the past four years, MPHS has not lost to a Mecklenburg County area school, posting a 119-4 overall record. In 2011-12 and 2012-13, the team suffered disapppointing losses in the state tournament. The 2013-14 and 2014-2015 teams both only lost one game, each time to Blackman HS. The recognition will especially congratulate seniors Aliyah Mazcyk (ma-ZEEK), D.D. Rogers and Morgan Uptegraff. All will continue their careers at Southern California, NC State and Queens University, respectively. Head Coach Barbara Nelson won seven state private school championships at Providence Day in Charlotte. This, along with her two public school championships, makes her one of the winningest North Carolina high school coaches. She also coached USA Basketball to two international gold medals. City Councilman Kenny Smith, a Myers Park HS graduate, invited the Mustangs and their coaches to come and be saluted for their excellence and historic achievements. Mustang fans and graduates and the public are invited to attend. End
