NEWBURY PARK, Calif. - May 29, 2015 - PRLog -- The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park is hosting its 5th annual Independence Day/July 4 5K/10K Run/Walk and a free family festival, parade and car show.

         A community all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the car show from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Awards will be given to winners of the car show’s “Top 10 Pick” and “Best in Show.”

         The 5k/10k Run/Walk starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Y (320 Via Las Brisas, Newbury Park).Runners and walkers will wind their way around the Dos Vientos neighborhood and finish back at the Y. The walk is family and stroller-friendly. Awards will be handed out to winners in each age category.

         New this year is a Kids Triathlon for ages 7 and up beginning at 8:30 a.m. Kids will be grouped by age and participate in swimming, biking and running. “Our youngest triathletes will swim 50 yards, bike a half mile and run a quarter mile,” says Katie Beck, Miller Y executive director. “Older kids will have a longer race course based on their age.” The cost is $35. Participants must be preregistered. To prepare for the triathlon, the Y is holding a Kids Tri Camp, June 30 through July 3.

         Free live entertainment, a kids' zone and family activities begin a 9:00 a.m. with a patriotic Fourth of July parade sponsored by the Dos Vientos Homeowners Association at 10:00 a.m. The parade begins at the Dos Vientos Community Center (4801 Borchard Rd.) and ends at the Y.

         The Independence Day 5k/10k is an annual fundraiser benefitting the Miller YMCA and its members that include over 6,000 Newbury Park and Conejo Valley residents. The proceeds go toward the Y’s financial assistance program that enables youth and families to take part in healthy living and youth development programs that they would not otherwise be able to afford.

         All run/walk participants receive a t-shirt (while supplies last). Runners will also receive a timing chip. To register early for the Kids Triathlon and the 5K and 10K Run/Walk, go to http://www.active.com and type in Miller Family YMCA and Newbury Park in the search boxes. Online registration starts at $30 per person and $70 per family (immediate family members only). In-person registration is also available on July 3 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Y and on event day beginning at 6:30 a.m. (higher registration costs on event day). The pancake breakfast is $5 per person, but free to all run/walk and car show entrants.

The Independence Day 5K/10K Run/Walk is part of the local Ys’ “Run For Your Community” race series that includes the Triunfo YMCA’s Goblin Gallop, October 24 and the Conejo Valley YMCA’s Turkey Day Dash, November 26. Runners who sign up for all three events receive a free hoodie sweatshirt with the series’ logo.
