OUCARES introduces life skills camp for adults with autism

Camp dates are June 22 - July 2 and July 13 - July 24 at Rising Stars Academy in Center Line, Mich.

ROCHESTER, Mich. - May 27, 2015 - PRLog -- This summer, the Oakland University Center for Autism’s Outreach Services (OUCARES) will offer its first Adult Life Skills Camp for individuals 18 and older with autism and other developmental disabilities. The camp is divided into two sessions, with each session lasting two weeks. Days and times are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The first session runs June 22- July 2 and the second session is July 13-July 24.  The camp is held at Rising Stars Academy, 23855 Lawrence St., in Center Line, Mich.

“There are not enough programs or camp opportunities designed specifically for adults on the autism spectrum, so we are very proud that OUCARES is able to fill in this programming gap by offering a Life Skills Camp for adults with ASD and other developmental disabilities,” said Kristin Rohrbeck, program coordinator for OUCARES.

“It is so important to teach practical life skills to people with autism spectrum disorder because these are the kinds of skills that may not be taught in typical educational settings. The OUCARES Life Skills Camp for adults will focus on teaching people with autism and other developmental disabilities the skills necessary to live independently and be productive, social members of society.”

With a social and fun atmosphere, the camp engages participants in various skill-building activities. Campers will learn:

-Practical living skills – teamwork, gardening, menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking
-Interpersonal skills – problem solving, team building, calming strategies and building self-esteem.
-Personal Management Skills – money management and safety, time management and hygiene.

The cost is $600 for each two-week session. Families can sign up for one or both sessions. For more information, or to register, visit oakland.edu/oucares or call (248) 370-2424. The application deadline is Friday, June 5. Once applications are received, applicants will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview with caregiver and potential camper.
