New Documentary Advocates for Better Heroin Addiction Treatment and Honors Producer's Late Brother

SAN DIEGO - May 21, 2015 - PRLog -- When Aubree Vance entered the School of Social Work at USC, she had no idea halfway through her program she would become passionate about advocating for heroin addicts.  It wasn't until her brother lost the final battle with his addiction to the powerful drug that she became fueled to become a powerful advocate for appropriate heroin addiction treatment.

Aubree Vance Partners with Spencer Levi Armansec who co-produced and co-directed the 16 minute documentary.  Spencer has an undergraduate degree in film and was able to bring major league talent to the project.  Both are now graduates of the USC Graduate School of Social Work, earning their MSW degrees.

In 16 minutes, "After the Last Dose", manages to enevelope the experience of the addict as well as that of the experts.  This film features Cannon Kristofferson, a Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor, and Program Director at The Grounds Recovery La Jolla, CA.  The Grounds is a transitional living program for men 18-30 years old, many of whom have a disagnosis of opioid dependency.  Also featured in the film is national expert, Kansas Cafferty, LMFT, MCA, CATC, NCAAC.  Kansas is the owner and clinical director of True North Recovery Services (www.sandiegoaddictions.com), an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program for addiction and co-occurring disorders located in Encinitas, CA.  Kansas is also a Commissioner for the National Certification Commission of Addiction Professionals which is the credentialing board of NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals.

Bringing experts to the film adds a dynamic of credibility to the advocacy inherent in the film, but the true power of the film lies in the words of the addicts themselves, as well as their parents.  Included are Aubree's own parents, who speak candidly about the loss of their son Nick.

Heroin addiction has plagued those in poverty for decades and is a well known and powerful addiction.  It hasn't been until recently, when prescription opiates began to fly off the shelves, that heroin became a middle class problem.  As this film shows, no ones children are immune and we are in an epidemic-one that needs a cure.  While this film may not be the cure for this societal ill, it is an enormous, well executed step in the right direction, fueled by knowing eyes, grief, and experience.  It is a must see film.
