CHARLESTON, S.C. - April 6, 2015 - PRLog -- 1 out of 8 couples will experience infertility. National Infertility Awareness Week’s  (April 19-25) goal is to increase awareness about infertility and highlight steps couples can take to address this diagnosis.   Dr. Stephanie Singleton of The Fertility Center of Charleston (TFCofC) explains, “There are a lot of beliefs about infertility that simply aren’t true.   This is a great time to educate about infertility and possibly help couples that may be struggling to start a family.”

Below are the top infertility myths.

Infertility Myths

1.    The infertility issue always lies with the female

Infertility is not just a woman's issue.  Male Factor Infertility is responsible for up to 40% of infertility cases.  There are now semen analysis kits available at TFCofC for men to retrieve a sample at home and then turn in to be tested.

2.    Infertility will cost thousands of dollars

The type of procedure needed will affect the cost.  More insurance plans are covering infertility treatment than in the past.  In addition, TFCofC saved patients more than $100,000 in medication costs in 2014.

3.    Same sex couples have very little options

The Fertility Center of Charleston works with couples in the LGBT community to help them achieve their dreams of starting a family.

4.    Couples should try for a few years before seeking help

Most couples, especially those with females over the age of 35, should consider scheduling an initial infertility consult after 6 months of trying to conceive.

NIAW week is April 19-25.   Dr. Stephanie Singleton is offering free consults to patients that schedule an initial consult during this week. To learn more, log onto www.fertilitycharleston.com.  To schedule an appointment, call 843-881-7400.
