Community members are invited to join FGO and its partners for an opportunity to explore the political and personal themes of life in a state of political chaos and limited personal freedom, exile and asylum as depicted in Menotti’s opera The Consul, which will be making its South Florida premiere on May 9, 2015. “The Consul Community Conversations” Details on each individual event are listed below. ======================================================= THE CONSUL COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS: This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. ======================================================= FLORIDA GRAND OPERA SEASON PREVIEW On Saturday, February 21, 2015, Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artist Program performed an end-of-season preview event at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Coral Gables, hosted by our resident opera expert Justin Moss. The brief program highlighted the plot-lines and music from our remaining 2014–15 Season productions of Georges Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers and Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul. Guests left fully informed and entertained with all of the captivating stories and beautiful arias (including the popular Pearl Fishers duet) scheduled for the evening. ---------------------------------- IN ENDLESS WAITING ROOMS presented in partnership with Florida International University School of International and Public Affairs March 29, 2015, 3:00pm Miracle Theater Balcony Theater 280 Miracle Mile Coral Gables, FL Join the Florida Grand Opera and the FIU School of International and Public Affairs for an afternoon of personal reflections on the experience of leaving home and traveling to a strange, new land. Punctuated with music from the Florida Grand Opera's upcoming production of Gian Carlo Menotti's celebrated work The Consul, the program takes the audience on a journey from Europe to Cuba and finally to Haiti. Together we pause and reflect on the struggles faced by individuals and communities who fled violence, political repression or abject poverty and embraced the challenges and hopes found within the Miami landscape. The journey and the endless waiting rooms, continue to be a source of bittersweet struggle and inspiration, as Menotti's opera and our individual stories show. The panelists will be joined by students from the Frost School of Music and by Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artists to present an interactive performance, which will include music selections from The Consul, as audience members journey from 1950 to 2015. Against projected images of propaganda posters from the museum’s permanent collection, FGO’s Young Artists will perform powerful selections from Menotti’s 1950 political opera The Consul to illustrate the politics, violence, and hatred that fuel the fires of war.
