Experts are saying the incredible light is a strong indication that an algal bloom is occuring. Sea Sparkle, or Noctiluca scintillans, has been found to create this kind of bloom. The single-cell organism is a wonder in its own right, being able to function as both a plant and an animal. These kinds of blooms are commonly caused by farm pollutino which wreaks havoc on local fisheries and marine life. Noctiluca, which eats plankton, is also eaten by other species. The Noctiluca and plankton are both abundant during increases of nitrogen and phosphorous from farm run-off.
