lps logo smaller Ransomware is simple in that it is usually disguised as an email attachment and once it is opened, it proceeds to encrypt the files on a machine and then the virus deletes itself. The virus has the ability to find and encrypt files located within shared network drives, USB drives, external hard drives, network file shares and even some cloud storage drives. If one computer on a network becomes infected, mapped network drives could also become infected. Cybercriminals have successfully used this virus to attack and gain online banking credentials, credit card numbers, and even the login credentials. Their trail of destruction has netted criminals millions of dollars. Payment for the “key” to unlock the encrypted files goes through services that allow the perpetrators to stay anonymous and doing this is never recommended. Principal and founder Jeff Higgins says “The most important thing to do is to never open a file or link in an email unless you’re sure of who sent it and what it is. If it looks suspicious, chances are it is. A plan-b strategy has become necessary now as well, anyone, anywhere at any time can fall victim to this virus. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of pain, the results of this virus can be crippling, utterly catastrophic.” The CryptoLocker virus has hit some major corporations and it continues to strike, most recently in the form of CrypoWall using Yahoo’s online advertising network to lure people in. These viruses can be removed with antivirus software, but the effects cannot. The encryption has never been able to be broken.
