By: IT CRAFT Apple’s iBeacon expands its application field. It is primarily used to push notifications to iOS devices via Bluetooth and was deployed for local businesses to deliver messages to passers by based on their proximity to local stores while sending coupons or discount alerts. Therefore, push notifications show up for users who have downloaded the app on their phones and have it open but they have never ordered a ride. They don’t have to fill anything in but if they call a taxi they will get a $10 credit for next rides. This way, the company emboldens new user to the trigger on their first. Mobile development director at Taxi Magic Jeff Pharr believes implementation of iBeacons is just the beginning. There are some technologies that have been acquired by the company. Among them the use of iBeacons to share fare payments, and putting iBeacons in vehicles so passengers can pay for their rides using the app if they hailed that car from the street. Meanwhile, Pharr anticipates people will adopt this technology as an alternative to Apple's AirDrop or iMessage for information sharing. In order to do it they will turn on and off the app. This would have minimal impact on battery usage because energy consumption will increase only for time as long as user broadcast and receive referral codes.
