Follow on Google News | Rick Woulfe still leads the Society of Seniors ChampionshipsFort Lauderdale Attorney Wolfe still in control at Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach. Fla.
By: Quail Ridge Country Club Good thing for the Fort Lauderdale attorney he also had an eagle and five birdies for a one-under 71 that left him at five-under 139. “It was a stock market-kind of back nine,” Woulfe said. “It was all over the place.” Woulfe, who won the 2007 Society of Seniors Championships held at Quail Ridge, leads by two over Bob Stephens of Indianapolis. Stephens, the reigning Indianapolis Senior Amateur champion, shot the day’s best round, a 70, in very windy conditions. “I’ve been putting great the last two days, and that makes up for a lot of mistakes,” said Stephens, who has had only two bogeys in 36 holes. “I’m going to need another 2- or 3-under round because Rick doesn’t usually come back to the field.” Woulfe made the turn at even-par, but made only two pars on the back nine. After a birdie at No. 10, he hit his tee shot out of bounds on No. 11 for a double bogey, but got those two shots back with a 6-foot eagle putt at No. 12. “That drive (at No. 11) was my only bad swing the last two days,” said Woulfe, who has been the Florida State Golf Association Senior Player of the Year seven times. It appears to be a two-man race – Bob Allshouse of Greensburg, Pa., (72-144) is the only other player within six shots of the lead. The Society of Seniors is an elite organization for players 55 and older who have handicaps of 3 or less. The SOS Championship is the nation’s second-ranked event for senior amateurs, behind only the U.S. Senior Amateur. In the John Owens Division (65-74), Dick Lockwood (71-146) of London, Ontariohas a one-shot lead over Joe Hackler (70-147) of Myrtle Beach. In the Grand Masters Division (75 and older), Bill Robischon (147) of Tequesta,Fla., shot a 73 and leads Harry Cain (77-150) of Williamsburg, Va., by three shots. The 54-hole event ends Thursday at Quail Ridge Country Club. End
