Boating Industry Starting to Roar

Michigan is third largest market in country for boating industry

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - July 24, 2014 - PRLog -- The Macomb Daily recently wrote an article about the boating industry, in which Eric Foster, general partner at Belle Maer Harbor in Harrison Township, mentioned he noticed the difference in boat sales as far back as February at the Detroit Boat Show.

“We sold a lot more boats than we have in previous years, and 70 percent of the boat buyers we had were either new owners or returning boaters looking for a second option. That means the size of the boating pie is getting larger,” he said.

It used to be powerboats ruled the water and, while they still make up 83 percent of the recreational boats in Michigan, because buyers are opting for a second boat, there’s more fishing boats and pontoons being harbored.

“A big seller right now is the pontoon boat. The sales on these have exploded,” Foster said. He attributes much of the newfound passion for pontoons to the fact that they are more affordable (being made of fiberglass) and a much nicer ride (having a better shock absorber system).
