PRLog -- Los Angeles—“Out of the Fire,” an award-winning documentary film offering insight into the little-known world of wood-firing potters, is now available for download via the Ceramics Arts Daily bookstore (http://ceramicartsdaily.org/
bookstore/browse-
dvds/) at CeramicArtsDaily.org, an online community serving active potters and ceramic artists worldwide. CeramicArtsDaily.org is produced by the Ceramic Publications Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The American Ceramic Society (http://ceramics.org/)
, which promotes the professional needs of the international ceramics community. The digital distribution of “Out of the Fire” is made possible through a partnership between The Ceramic Publications Company and Out of the Fire Films, LLC.
This inspiring documentary follows Kevin Crowe (http://www.kevincrowepottery.com/
index.htm), his apprentice Krista Loomans and others during a four-day firing of Crowe’s Japanese-style wood burning kiln at Tye River Pottery in Amherst, Virginia. Crowe produces wood-fired, functional pottery and fires his kiln twice yearly. The kiln’s contents represent nearly six months worth of work and potential income. Maintaining a constant high temperature for four days requires intense labor, many hands, and much patience. Temperature fluctuations or other mishaps could lead to broken pots and loss of income. Along with portraying the camaraderie, techniques and drama of the firing, the film explores the drive to create, the importance of mentorship and community, and the roles risk-taking and authenticity play in creating the best possible work and living life to the fullest.
"It is a real pleasure to partner with The Ceramic Publications Company to make this film available to audiences through the Ceramics Arts Daily bookstore,” said Courtenay Singer, director of “Out of the Fire.” "This film not only celebrates pottery making, but also highlights the importance of being open to change, taking calculated risks and following your dreams. I am so pleased that now, through digital download, the film can be seen by potters, artists, documentary film lovers and anyone needing a dose of inspiration."
The documentary has screened at 11 film festivals nationwide, including the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (

. As the film continues to screen at film festivals, museums and craft centers around the country, this online distribution arrangement makes the film immediately available to audiences in the US and internationally. “Out of the Fire” had its World Premiere in September 2013 at the Breckenridge Festival of Film (http://www.breckfilmfest.com/)
, and is Singer’s first feature film.
