The Hamilton Essentials Foundation Brings Media Minded Back to San Bernardino

Media Minded, a boot camp that uses hip-hop as a tool to bring awareness and problem solving to the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - May 30, 2014 - PRLog -- San Bernardino – The Hamilton Essentials Foundation, Inc. and The Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino has teamed up to bring the much-needed Media Minded boot camp back to the community.  Starting Monday, July 21, 2014 and ending Friday, August 1, 2014 from 2pm-4pm, The Media Minded Journalism and Media Internship Boot Camp will use hip-hop, the influences of media and the power of perception to youth ages 12-25 years of age. This free boot camp will assist in helping youth identify and analyze the influences hip-hop has on its juvenile listeners in forms of alcohol and substance abuse, mental health, anger, depression and development of social responsibility while developing vocational skills related to journalism, radio, and television.   Youth will explore issues at a community level, family level, and a personal level that lead to alcohol and substance abuse, lack of social responsibility and poor mental health while using radio stations like The Power is Now Radio to broadcast their journalistic documentaries.

Media Minded is inspired by a love for literacy and Hip-Hop shared by The Hamilton Essentials Foundation Program Director, Monette “MoPoetic” Hamilton. “Juvenile illiteracy has always been an issue in our inner-city communities. It’s time to address the white elephant in the room.  Impoverished mentalities, alcohol and substance abuse have plagued our communities for decades and juveniles seldom possess the tools, courage, and voice to combat the destructive roll these vices can play in their lives. We’ve seen evidence that programs like these help to shine some light on dark situations.  Using hip-hop as disguised learning, per se, really speaks a dialect to which youth can relate. We’re thankful that this program is made possible in part by a grant from The West End Youth Grantmakers Committee and Reach Out and the partnership with The Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino.” –Monette Hamilton

It is no secret that Hip-Hop is popular in the inner-city communities; the goal of Media Minded is for participants to discover it is an effective tool to re-teach the skills necessary to combat harmful vices and lack of social responsibility.  Media Minded will conclude the camp with a culminating awards ceremony on Friday, August 1, 2014, 5pm at The Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino. The entire community is invited.
