Workload to rise as divorcing couples must explore ‘an easier and quicker’ solution

PORTSMOUTH, U.K. - April 25, 2014 - PRLog -- Family mediators from Hampshire Family Mediation say they are ready and waiting for an expected increase in the numbers of divorcing and separating couples seeking their services.

One of the most significant changes in the law affecting divorcing and separating couples for many years came into effect last Tuesday (22 April), when it became compulsory for them to attend a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before they can go to court.

“Courts will be required to know that mediation has been considered before making an application to the Family Court in disputes over money or the upbringing of children. So, an initial meeting, knows as a MIAM, will become a ‘must’ for separating or divorcing couples in Hampshire”, says Fiona Poustie, Chief Executive of Hampshire Family Mediation.

“There has been a lot of information on the news about the changes, and yet there is still some confusion about what mediation actually is.  It’s not about trying to get couples back together, but instead helps them find long-term solutions for the future.  Currently people tend to think of heading off to a court room.  Mediation has always been a quicker, easier and less confrontational way to resolve things.  It’s also much more cost effective and free if you are eligible for Legal Aid.”
