The Sun Never Sets On Real Love

In Ruth Owen’s Into Dusk Jean is suffering with emotional instability but there’s only one man who can help...

April 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Jean is a middle-aged woman who takes on a dramatic life of role play by assuming multiple identities. Widowed and childless, Jean longs for the comfort of someone whom she once was inseparable from – her younger brother, Barry. Always immaculate in appearance, she is highly critical of the apparent lack of care and moral shortcomings of others – and yet fails to see the irony in her own questionable behaviour...

In an attempt to drive away her shame at not having fulfilled her reproductive purpose in life, Jean becomes despondent. She spends her days occupied by menial tasks to keep her from thinking about her long-lost brother.

“True, she felt unsettled and irritated with herself if she didn’t stick to the plan, but there also existed, within her, a feeling she couldn’t name, a feeling that she feared, which dragged her down far too far, and it was in a bid to push that feeling away, that drove her to fulfil her schedule to the letter.”

Shame, failure and disappointment are prominent motifs that are portrayed by all of the characters. The siblings’ mutual friend, Brenda, hopes to reunite the family – but will time run out before they are reconciled?

“Few works of literary fiction have the sibling relationship as a central focus. In addition, childlessness, and its long-term effects, is rarely explored, nor are eating disorders in women in their fifties,” says Ruth Owen who has centralised Into Dusk around these issues.
