Costco to Host Book Signing for Local Dublin Authors

Steven S. Minniear and Georgean Vonheeder-Leopold will be available to sign copies of pictorial history

DUBLIN, Calif. - March 24, 2014 - PRLog -- This pictorial history takes a look at life during WWII for about 70,000 sailors living in Camp Parks, Camp Shoemaker and the Shoemaker Naval Hospital in Dublin. Using vintage images the book highlights how sailors, Seabees, Marines and Coast Guardsmen once ate, slept, trained and marched through what are now schools, shopping centers, businesses, parks and homes. In fact, about one third of modern Dublin is made up of land used formerly by the Navy.

Images have been culled from local historical museums, including the Museum on Main, Pleasanton, Livermore Heritage Guild and Dublin Heritage Park and Museums.  These images show the importance of the Navy in the area during WWII.  Authors Minniear and Vonheeder-Leopold write, “There is a very good chance that if you had a relative in the Navy during WWII, his or her last duty station before they went home might have been in Dublin at Camp Shoemaker.”  So whether readers have a tie to the area or military, or they are simply just curious about the area’s history, Dublin and The Tri-Valley: The World War II Years will illuminate the area’s past and preserve its history for future generations.

Highlights of Dublin and The Tri-Valley: The World War II Years:

The role of young women from Pleasanton and Livermore, who acted as hostesses at dances and events sponsored by local civic groups for the sailors.
Many sailors or servicemen who were injured in the Pacific theater of war, recuperated at Shoemaker Naval Hospital.
Livermore and Pleasanton were prime drinking location for thirsty sailors on leave.
