By: Glide Bikes Inc Through utilizing appropriate physical education in the least restrictive environment to each special needs child they come in contact with, Adapted Physical Education (APE) teachers are able to enhance the experience that each student has when it’s time for Gym class. Glide Bikes recently donated a Go Glider bicycle to the program to offer a new way to increase motor skills and to encourage students to get excited about physical fitness. After having students assist in putting the bike together, Lara Brickhouse, an APE teacher, described one student’s experience this way, “He knew exactly where each part went, and just needed a little help tightening up everything. He used sign language to tell us he needed a helmet to ride! Knowing that he would get a turn on the bike led to him participating in PE without having a single negative behavior. Can’t put a price on that!” The APE program will be hosting their 4th Annual Adapted PE Dodgeball Tournament on March 1st, 2014 where they will be raising money to support the Adapted PE program. During the tournament there will also be a raffle giveaway where the take-home prize will be a Go Glider. A Go Glider is the perfect 16” balance bike for children 5-10 years old, allowing them to develop the necessary skills to balance on a traditional two wheel bicycle. Taking place at JH Rose High School, the event features teams of 6 who have registered for the tournament. Onlookers are able to enjoy the show, donate to the cause, and have the chance of winning some great prizes. Last year there were 16 teams that competed and over 1200 dollars were raised in the process. Help support APE so they can continue to provide special needs students with better experiences every day. Their website pcsadaptedpe.weebly.com offers information on what they do and how you can help volunteer or donate. End
