PITTSBURGH - Feb. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Dr. Margaret Smiechowski, North America's foremost expert on Himalayan salt, is pleased to announce the opening of a new salt cave creation in Pittsburgh, PA.

Peace, Love & Zen Holistic Wellness Center opened on September 7, 2013 at 6023 Broad Street. Owner Susan Coe, a veteran, wanted to create a "sanctuary where members of the community can de-stress while receiving state-of-the-art natural therapy. Our mission is to empower individuals to initiate, expand, and maintain their physical and spiritual wellness through education and guidance" from her staff. With a wide-range of holistic services offered, including massage therapy, Reiki, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and yoga, Coe decided to feature a Himalayan salt cave in her facility and contracted with Dr. Smiechowski to design this element of her business.

"The East Liberty cave has many things in common with other caves I have designed," says Smiechowski, "but it has some brand new elements that make it a one-of-a-kind. My other designs are basically health and tranquility caves, but the cave at Peace, Love & Zen is my first looking into sky design with a very unique ceiling that creates the illusion of looking up into the nighttime sky. This cave took about 550 man hours to complete as each component was hand-formed. It is made up of about six tons of Himalayan salt. It features a commissioned soundtrack with deep healing sound frequencies especially for this cave. It also features new technology that allows us to carefully control the concentration of salt in the air."

Visitors to the East Liberty neighborhood facility sit in the climate-controlled comfort of zero-gravity chairs. A 45-minute session in the cave costs just $30, with discounts for veterans over 65 years old. The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM.

Research on the benefits of Himalayan salt is conducted regularly in Russia, China, and Poland, and has supported the belief that halotherapy, the clinical use of salt, is highly beneficial for the respiratory system. In other parts of the world, Himalayan salt therapy is used for a wide variety of medical purposes, but salt caves like these in the United States are hailed for their relaxation benefits.

"It's the high mineral content that makes the caves so beneficial," says Smiechowski. "The Himalayan salt contains every mineral that the human body needs. Visitors breathe in the minerals and feel the benefits after just a few minutes."

Smiechowski built her first salt cave in 2007 at the Pyramid Holistic Wellness Center in Rutland, Vermont, and has built many additional caves around the country. She is known for innovative designs that combine the most recent technology with the healing benefits and beauty of the pink salt.

"Every cave that Dr. Margaret designs is a work of art on its own, in addition to the amazing wellness benefits it provides," says Dr. William Kelley, owner of the Pyramid Holistic Wellness Center that houses Smiechowski's original creation.
