La Immigrata, a two volume novel by author Anna Florin, has been turned into a six episode screenplay for television. When asked who might be interested in developing this historical mini-series, Florin stated they’re looking for a producer attached to Netflix, HBO or NPR. “Any of these production companies could create a captivating story with this 389 page script. The characters come to life, grab your heart and dare you to not get involved in their lives,” she told us.
La Immigrata is a heartwarming story of Annie, a young woman emigrating to America in 1912. She and her husband, Joe, settle in Utah where he finds work making train wheels for the railroad. Historical incidents run throughout the storyline, enabling the viewer to gain a better understanding of the hardships people endured in those days, what they lived without and how they saw the world around them.
In 1912, the industrial revolution was gaining momentum, as hundreds of new gadgets made their way onto the markets and into the homes. It’s surprising how long it took from the time an item was invented and put on the market, to when it was commonly thought to be a necessity. Telephones took about fifty years to saturate the market, cars took only twenty. This story follows Annie through her life in America, through WWI, Prohibition, the Great Depression, WWII, through the 1950s and 60s, up until her death. Florin added, “By the end of the show, people will understand the early twentieth century a lot better.”
