Nov. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Over the coming years, you can expect to see sticky labels appear in your life in some unexpected places. Some of their uses will be simple but effective. Others will likely blow your mind.

Hospitals are already using sticky labels in their maternity units, with barcode stickers used to create wristbands for newborn babies, as part of the screening process. This wristband will contain a wealth of information about each baby, including name, NHS number, DOB, sex and mother’s name.

These barcode labels have replaced the handwritten labels produced previously. As such they have reduced the human error factor in maternity wards around the UK.

Hospitals also used printed heel prick labels, which are used to identify blood samples when babies are tested for life altering conditions like sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis. The previous alternative to this system was also a handwritten form, which created the same problem of human error.

These sticky labels have reduced the number of misreading errors, and the time taken to process baby’s information. It is thought that the time taken to process information has been slashed by more than 400% since the advent of the sticky label system.

Another futuristic new use for sticky labels which has been mooted for some time is the ingenious early warning sunburn indicator; which uses intelligent ink to inform sunbathers of when they should head for the shade and avoid harmful sunburn.

Developed by researchers in Scotland (where sunburn is not always the most pressing concern) these sticky labels turn pink when exposed to too much ultraviolet light. When that happens, the wearer can think about getting out of the sun for a while. The labels, which could be quickly and simply stuck to a bathing costume could provide the ideal early warning sign of a sunburn risk, since people will often not realise that they are contracting a burn until it is too late.

Sunburn can have terrible consequences beyond a short term reddening and soreness. Exposure to ultraviolet light is the primary cause of skin cancer, which is an extremely common condition. An estimated 100,000 people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) every year. With the help of these innovative sunburn sticky labels, it is conceivable that this number could reduce significantly.

LabelsPlus use high tech printing processes, high grade printing inks and varnishes to supply clean, clear labels with vibrant colours. They are leading supplier of food labels and food packaging labels but also supply a wide variety of other labels to a diverse array of industry sectors.
