| ![]() New Outdoor Adventure Course For Language StudentsLearning English doesn't have to mean sitting in a classroom for hours each day. An international language school is taking the classroom outside for an adventure.
There are morning lessons in a traditional classroom, but in the afternoons the learning moves outside for the adventure and fun elements. All the activities are taught in English, but the students are barely aware of the fact that they are learning the language as they are concentrating so much on the physical activities. All the adventure activities are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students. The instructors are qualified and experienced in their fields. The water sports take place at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy, while the mountain biking and rock climbing are on Portland. Transport and all the equipment is provided by the school. The international course is available for all young people aged between 13 and 17 although a basic knowledge of English is required for safety reasons. The students stay with local host families, who provide all meals and look after the students as part of their families. In the evenings there is a programme of activities, where the students can choose from a range of different sports as well as discos, cultural visits, a pizza and games evening, a talent show and others. On Saturdays there is a full day excursion. A sightseeing trip to London is popular and there are trips to Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge and other destinations. As the students come from many different countries from as far afield as China, they all communicate in English. As well as an opportunity to improve their English, the courses are also a place where young people from different backgrounds and cultures come together and learn about one another. Pastoral care is important and the school arranges to meet students when they arrive at Heathrow and accompanies them to Weymouth. Teachers and leaders are with them on all their activities and members of staff are available round the clock. This isn't the first specialist course that the school has run. English and Sailing was introduced several years ago and is still proving popular, and English and Performing Arts was introduced in 2011. It was the success of these courses that led the Weymouth English Centre to introduce the English and Outdoor Adventure course. Christopher Hills, the school's director, says "Learning another subject is a very effective way of learning English. Having a lot of fun and doing something physically and mentally demanding is a great combination. The students don't even have time to realise that they are picking up a lot of English at the same time. It's only afterwards that they suddenly realise that their English has got a whole lot better too!" Details of the course are at http://www.weymouthenglishcentre.com/ End
