Prince George Christened in Traditional Royal Gown But are Formal Christening Outfits Falling Out of

The future King was christened this week, in a gown passed down through the Royal generations. But these days, “casual” christening outfits are becoming the norm.

Oct. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Prince George, the newborn son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, was christened on Wednesday, at an informal ceremony in the Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace, which just over 20 friends and family in attendance.

The future monarch wore a gown made from delicate Honiton lace and ivory satin, an exact copy of a gown that has been passed down through the royal generations for over 170 years.

Queen Victoria had the intricate gown made for her firstborn daughter’s christening back in 1841, and it has been worn for every Royal christening since, including the Queen, Prince Charles, and George’s father Prince William.

However, in 2004, the Queen deemed the historic gown too delicate for further use, and commissioned her own personal dress maker to craft an exact replica. The new replica gown was first used by James, Viscount Severn, the son of Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex, in 2008.

Despite the tradition for grand christening gowns being alive and well for the Royals, for the rest of us, it seems that formal christening outfits are becoming a thing of the past.

The Church requires all children to be wrapped in a white garment during the ceremony, as a sign of their embarking on a new life with Christ. Other than that, unless there is a family tradition or heirloom, like the Royals have, formal gowns are just not necessary.

Modern day christenings are more likely to see babies dressed in smart clothing rather than elaborate christening gowns, and there is no better place to shop for beautiful baby clothes than at online boutique Blossom Mother and Child.

Blossom Mother and Child specialise in designer clothing and accessories for both mother and baby. Indeed, some of their items come with the Royal seal of approval.

The day after his birth, William and Kate left St Mary’s Hospital with tiny Prince George wrapped in an Aden + Anais swaddle.

Aden + Anais is one of the most popular brands that Blossom Mother and Child stock, and unsurprisingly, demand for their swaddles shot through the roof as soon as George was spotted looking snug in his own swaddle from the Jungle Jam collection.
