You are in for a whirlwind trip around the globe with three esteemed authors: Robert Antoni, Ruth Behar and Michael Deibert.

The inspiration for Robert Antoni’s writing is his long family history in Trinidad and Tobago, and his upbringing in the Bahamas. Antoni is the author of three novels, Divina Trace, Blessed is the Fruit, and Carnival. His latest historical novel, As Flies to Whatless Boys, charts his family’s emigration from England to Trinidad in 1845 as part of an experimental utopian society. Antoni’s books have been awarded the Commonwealth Writers Prize and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. His short fiction was chosen for the Aga Kahn Prize by the Paris Review. Antoni lives in Manhattan and teaches in the graduate writing program at The New School University.

Ruth Behar was born in Cuba and grew up in New York. She is the Victor Haim Perera Collegiate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. She is a recipient of a MacArthur “genius” Award and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. As an ethnographer she has received wide recognition for her personal and provocative travel writing. Her non-fiction books include Translated Woman: Crossing the Border with Esperanza’s Story, The Vulnerable Observer: Anthropology That Breaks Your Heart, and An Island Called Home: Returning to Jewish Cuba. Her most recent book is Traveling Heavy: A Memoir in Between Journeys. It tells about Behar’s life as both an immigrant child uprooted from Cuba and as a woman whose job it is to travel and return home with stories.

Michael Deibert is the author of Democratic Republic of Congo: Between Hope and Despair, Notes from the Last Testament: The Struggle for Haiti. His writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the Miami Herald, Le Monde Diplomatique, and the World Policy Journal, among other publications. He has been a featured commentator on international affairs for the BBC, Channel 4, Al Jazeera, National Public Radio, WNYC New York Public Radio and KPFK Pafica Radio.
