Managing conflict in the workplace

Trevor Brennan explains the process behind accepting and resolving conflict in the workplace.

Oct. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- When we shy-away from conflict, we miss significant opportunities to debate and challenge ideas. More than a disagreement, conflict will (when ignored) continue to fester, often leading to dysfunctional teams or environments.

We (as humans) react to suggestions and comments based upon on our own perceptions, and these tend to trigger strong emotive responses. By understanding how to resolve conflict, we can channel frustration into meaningful direction.

Resolution process:

1. Discuss the conflict:
Listen to others' opinions with empathy, without interruption, and try to understand the opposing view. Remain calm throughout.

2. Agree the problem: Sometimes, the perceived problem is not the same! Clarify what the key issues are.

3. Brainstorm potential solutions: For true satisfaction, everyone should have an input into potential solutions.

4. Negotiate to a win-win-win: Ask yourself these three questions: Are you moving in the right direction? Is your interlocutor satisfied? Is your organisation is progressing?
