Hoag Orthopedic Institute First in Orange County to Introduce Germ-Zapping Robot into the OR

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Oct. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- IRVINE, Calif.– Hoag Orthopedic Institute, one of the top orthopedic specialty hospitals in the U.S., is the first medical facility in Orange County to introduce an innovative, germ-zapping robot into its operating rooms and patient rooms.

The Xenex robot, which uses pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV-C) light 25,000 times more powerful than the sun, is able to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi and even bacterial spores in a room in just five minutes. The five-foot-tall disinfecting device is portable and will be used throughout the hospital.

The robot will be integrated into the rigid sterilization processes already in place at Hoag Orthopedic Institute. It will be wheeled into each operating room at the end of the day after the hospital’s infection control team has had an opportunity to go through their standard cleaning protocol. Additionally, the robot will be used in each patient room after discharge.
