He served as a firefighter for approximately seven years. Following Kevin's military career, he joined the City of Raleigh Fire Department and was responsible for protecting the lives and property of Raleigh citizens for three years before going to law school. Kevin graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law. While in law school, Kevin focused his study on criminal law and workers' compensation. Kevin clerked with Attorney Claudia McClinton of the McNeil firm, the Wake County Public Defender's Office and the United States Attorneys' Office for the Middle District of North Carolina. Additionally, Kevin was a member of NCCU Law's Juvenile Law and Criminal Defense Clinics. Kevin gained valuable criminal law experience at both the state and federal level through these clerkships and clinics. Kevin was awarded a superlative for the person "you would least like to face in trial" as a member of the law school's trial team.
