She is pursuing an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) student at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Career Development Grants (http://www.aauw.org/ Clovia Hamilton plans to use the award to help with tuition, fees, dependent care, and transportation. Clovia says “I was shocked when I learned that I won the award and felt incredibly relieved that there are still great organizations out there that are willing to help folks that want to help themselves!” Clovia Hamilton has served as a director of intellectual property and research compliance at Old Dominion University and technology transfer specialist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught business law, ethics, and government contracting at several universities and counseled business owners in business planning, development, legal compliance, and marketing. Her goal is to earn a master’s degree, doctorate, and tenure at a research university that helps small businesses. She was told by a Small Business Administration (SBA) District Director that she needed a MBA to teach business owners in the SBA funded Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) located in universities. So, Clovia decided to pursue the MBA. “The AAUW Career Development Grant recipients are an amazing group of women who are seeking new opportunities and professional training to advance their careers,” said Gloria Blackwell, AAUW vice president of fellowships, grants, and global programs. “One recent recipient used the grant to pursue advanced certification in auto mechanics at a community college. While there, she helped start a club to support female mechanic students. She’s just one of countless examples of how our awardees work to empower women and girls.” For the 2013–14 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million to 245 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls through six fellowships and grants. AAUW is one of the world’s leading supporters of graduate women’s education, having awarded nearly $100 million in fellowships, grants, and awards to more than 12,000 women from more than 130 countries since 1888.
