Aug. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- arty People. Pet Peeve Time. Also grammar time. Listen Up. This is actually a conversation I had to have with someone. “The” is not the first word of anything. Now, I know it starts a lot of things. “The” Declaration of Independence. “The” Civil War. “The” Wheel. It’s a wonderful little thing we call a Definite Article. Does it bring you back to the SATs? Does it hurt your head? Yes, yes it does.

Have you ever had to type in “the” to search a file name? If you haven’t, I envy you. We number nerds, most of the time, don’t give much weight to grammar. It’s numbers numbers numbers all the time. And, By Science I love it! But, example: Right now I’m listening to a lovely little ditty called “Policy of Truth” by someone wonderful called Depeche Mode. Notice it’s not called “The Policy of Truth”. Seriously. Google that stuff. “The” is NOT the first word. It’s an implied definite article. When we speak, we say “the” because it’s necessary, but when you type, not so much. When we label file folders. No. When we label file names, NEVER. “The” is not the first word of ANYTHING. If you’re creating a file folder label, or thinking of a file name when you hit “Save as”, DO NOT make your first word “The”.
