The TeenTech Awards 2013 unveil Britain's innovators of the future

LONDON - July 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Last week the eleven winning teams of the inaugural TeenTech® Awards, which were co-sponsored by City University London, visited Buckingham Palace to receive their awards from His Royal Highness The Duke of York KG.

The TeenTech Awards challenged UK students aged between 11 and 16 to find innovative solutions to problems in eleven categories from communications to construction and education to entertainment.

The journalism category, which was sponsored by City, asked entrants to use any media to report on a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) story. The winning entry came from Parkside Federation Academies, Cambridge, for their article entitled "Descending under the Ice - A Snowball Earth."

Professor George Brock, Head of City's Department of Journalism, who judged the category, said: "The team from Parkside Federation Academies scooped the TeenTech Journalism Award because they showed a strong grasp of what makes good science journalism. Their account of the "Snowball Earth" theory was clear, fluent, accessible and inviting to read."

Over a hundred young people representing almost every region in the UK travelled from as far as Greenock in Scotland in the North and Truro in Cornwall in the south to present their science ideas to an eminent board of judges at The Royal Society in London.

Dr Sue O'Hare, Director of City's Enterprise Office, said: "City is a keen supporter of TeenTech's work in changing perceptions about STEM careers among young people and their teachers. We have seen TeenTech events inspire, open eyes, bridge gaps and build new relationships.

The University was delighted to sponsor the Journalism category and help to inform and enthuse young journalists about the exciting possibilities that lie ahead."
