Words of Frank Moseley the II

I was once told "do what you love and you will never work again." Growing up as a youth in an "at risk" neighborhood, you watch your family and friends' families go to work every day they can, battling to survive against the adverse conditions of poverty. In an environment like that, you are constantly bombarded with distractions. My mother taught me to stay focused on two things; getting my education and the power of entrepreneurship. They were my rod and my compass.

At 14, I started my first unofficial business as an unlicensed neighborhood barber. I was cutting the heads of squirmy little kids at half the price of the older barbers. Even then I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I wasn't as sure of what kind. My sister and I were the only kids from our neighborhood that left for college and the first to go in our family. During college, I took course work on the subjects that I felt passionate about; teaching, electronics and business. I was fortunate to have my life experiences align with those passions, which provided context and a deeper understanding of those subject matters that were of interest to me. I made a lot of mistakes and bad decisions over those years, but always kept the perspective that each one was a learning experience that provided future teachable moments.  I wanted to share with others all that I had learned and how to avoid some of the missteps and pitfalls that so many of us succumb to.

When I returned home years later I found that little had changed. The cycle had not been broken and history was already starting to repeat itself. I came to a realization that the solution was not just education but more specifically financial education. We do a great disservice to our youth when we casually disregard financial literacy as anything other than an essential and fundamental life skill. In all reality it is an equal counterpart to its predecessors; reading writing and arithmetic. How to budget, manage, save and definitely invest are fundamental parts of the financial success in this country. These are the best tools in our arsenal to fight poverty and increase the rate of upward mobility.

It was during my 2008 case study, while presenting the first version of the F.U.N. Program to a group of high school students that I realized that changes needed to be made on how we educate this generation of learners. A huge transformation would have to take place.
Although I was extremely encouraged by the post-test results, which demonstrated a double digit increase in learning, I was also deeply troubled. Some of the students, who needed it the most, simply put, were not getting it. At times, they seemed disengaged by some of the more complex and dryer subject matter, which is understandable. However, some were more interested in texting their friends than learning about finance.  It occurred to me that they did not have a clue as to how invaluable this information was. I needed them to know that there is a huge difference between just surviving and living the lifestyle they desire. Inevitably, I saw this one student who reminded me of myself at that age. I went home that day thinking if only I knew then what I know now; how different my life could have been if only I had maximized my full potential. I feel like I've been endowed with the spirit of a teacher, an innovator and an activist. Instead of just accepting them as statistical outliers or rounding errors in the data, I decided I wanted to create a solution to reach all kids.

In order to truly reach everyone I had to embrace their new 21st century style of learning and make it credible. Instead of trying to fight the inevitable evolution of education and technology, I wanted Focus (LLC) to successfully integrate the two. I felt like if we could focus on solving this one problem, then we would have a profound impact on today's youth. Providing a greater understanding of life after high school, could definitely break the vicious cycle of poverty. Ultimately, I created the Focus Learning Platform to connect young adults and teachers to the technology they needed to deliver an effective blended learning environment for this generation of learners. Equipping them with the tools that are essential for achieving financial success; that's Focus!
