DIGITAL SMILE SYSTEM: innovative software of Digital Smile Design

Feb. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Bologna, 30 January 2013 - In the occasion of 35th International Dental Show, EGS, leader partner for OEM companies, will present the first software of Digital Smile Design allowing to design aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the smile by means of automatic and dedicated tools.

Digital Smile System (DSS) will build a perfect, digital and personalized design of the smile, following a guided procedure. Through the digital elaboration, the dentist is able to present to the patient the visualization of the final result of the restoration, and to provide the necessary aesthetic information for modeling the future prosthesis to dental technicians.

The aesthetic elaboration is made by means of photo-retouch according to the actual practice; with the new DSS software the same steps are now automatic based on mathematics and accurate real data measurements.

It's a dedicated software, specifically developed for this task; it doesn't stop its analysis to the mouth, but makes an evaluation of the entire face of the patient. The software is provided with a measured chart, patented and designed for DSS, used to generate repeatability of the measurements and create a medical record.

The first phase of the project consists on a digital and personalized diagnostic analysis of the patient's case. This is done by means of a series of photographs of the face, which are then elaborated to design the perfect smile by using libraries of teeth included with the software. The system performs a series of accurate and mathematically controlled measurements to verify alignments, symmetries and proportions allowing to proceed to a digital reconstruction of the smile. This way, ad-hoc, personalized dental structures and shapes can be selected for each patient to verify the final aesthetic result before the actual reconstruction process has even begun. DSS works with commercial libraries, for total rehabilitations in case of edentulous patients, and with proprietary libraries of natural teeth based on mouth morphing and real teeth, allowing to work on lifting. The final result is then shown to the patient through a pre-visualization of the future smile that, thanks to the integrated mathematics, from digital will be transformed to real. The software is based on DSS protocol, however, it could be also used with other protocols.

The innovative diagnostic method changes the way to plan treatment phases and increase its acceptance from the patient, who participate in first person to his smile design by seeing what the final result will look like after the treatment. In this way the communication between the dentist and the patient improve.

The philosophy at the base of this new approach is that of creating and maintaining harmony between the patient's smile and face, first by making an aesthetic and functional analysis of the face, afterwards also an analysis of dental and periodontal components and occlusal aspects.

The software is available for Windows or Mac. It follows the latest trends in web communication by offering a dedicated viewer (also for iPad) for the visualization of the final result.

The project has been realized thanks to the strong collaboration between EGS and Téchne, specialized in dentistry education.

Digital Smile System will be first preview presented at IDS to be held from 12 to 16 March 2013 at Cologne, Germany (EGS stand Hall 4.1/A013).

EGS has scheduled a Press Tour on Thursday, 14th March 2013, during which EGS will launch its novelties targeted at the dental industry.
