By: New Business Data The recession has continued during last year, 2012, and it is interesting to see how it has affected various business sectors. The analysis this year looks at the types of businesses setting up, is it a brand new business or is it a new owner etc and what sectors, SIC codes, are setting up. The major difference between the 2011 and 2012 is the decline in proportion of new owners of existing businesses and the increase in the proportion of wholly new businesses. People are prepared to strike out on their own rather than take over an existing business. The changes in the types of business sector setting up shows an expansion in Food, Retail and Wholesale; however within that group there have been some winners and losers. The proportion of Solar Energy Equipment Suppliers and Installers fell along with Newsagents and Florists. The decline in the solar energy businesses reflects cuts to the feed in tariff made on 9th June 2011. However the proportion of Charity Shops and Convenience Stores has increased which can be seen in any high street. The area showing the biggest decline is Services - Business and Consumer. Within this sector Alternative & Complementary Medicines & Therapies show a significant decline along with Graphic Designers. In contrast, Training Centres and Training Consultants have shown marked growth. End
