Dr. Lisa Corsa explains how RUSI is a new and exciting tool for Physical Therapists, this technique uses existing ultrasound technology to evaluate muscle and soft-tissue function during physical tasks. Ultrasound imaging is most well known for its use in examining the developing fetus during pregnancy. However, it has become a valid tool for physical therapists to use for assessing patient function during therapy. Therapeutic Application: Low back pain Pelvic floor dysfunction Continence issues Rotator cuff injuries Tendon issues in the hands The use of RUSI in treatment has allowed practicing therapists to better focus treatment on dysfunctional patterns and return patients to normal function more quickly and more thoroughly. RUSI allows therapists to look inside the patients bodies to assess important muscles that are not visible on the surface. In the treatment of low back and pelvic pain, therapists are able to examine the core muscles - abdominal wall, pelvic floor, and lumbar musculature - in real time. Therapists can determine if patients’ core stabilizers are functioning appropriately. In addition, therapists can use RUSI as visual feedback to help teach patients how to properly stabilize their spine. Research has shown that use of RUSI in training lumbar stabilizers resulted in greater success than traditional rehabilitation techniques. RUSI is a non-invasive way to assess the function of the pelvic floor and can be useful in training patients with continence issues. Dr. Lisa Corsa and Premier Therapy Solutions now offers RUSI in the South Florida Clinic located in Boca Raton.
