Each year in the United States, more than 100,000 children wait to be adopted. In 2011, less than half of them were matched with adoptive families. Studies find that children who age out of the foster care system -- which, depending on the state, ranges between ages 18 and 21 -- suffer from higher rates of insufficient education, unintended pregnancy, joblessness, homelessness and incarceration. Family and Youth Initiative ( founded by Susan Punnett, a 15-year veteran of child welfare and social services) helps match local teens to caring adoptive parents, giving them a place to call home. The most comprehensive national data source for numbers of children in foster care and adopted is AFCARS (Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System). Most recent data is for Federal Year 2011 (e.g., as of September 30, 2011).

As of that date there were 104,236 children waiting to be adopted but in the previous 12 months only 50,516 children were adopted. So not quite half of the waiting children are adopted. (The waiting children number does not include those children 16 and older whose goal may previously have been adoption and for whom parental rights may have been terminated but have since had a goal change because their agency was unable to find them an adoptive family. So the number of children who might want to be adopted is actually higher than reported.) Using the AFCARS data, there were 27,542 waiting children age 12 or older but only 5,797 children adopted at age 12 or older. So about 21% of older children are adopted.

Show your support and make plans to attend this event of compassion and kindness.
