Dec. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Private sharing has never been needed more after Instagram's policy change use http://Drop.MX

“Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.” - Cnet

Seeing this move by instagram who are owned by Facebook can only telegraph one thing. Private file sharing has never been as necessary as it is today. With this action, one can only assume that facebook would also take a similar stance to use your images for it’s profit without your consent in the very near future.

This is an important shift for your internet privacy because of the unspecified use of your content. Effectively instagram thinks they can make profits and have unlimited usage rights without any compensation for you. We can now see the direction our massively public social networking sites will take for profits. We wanted to make something different - that's why we made Drop.MX. Private sharing and mobile access have never been so necessary. We believe that being able to send pictures and any other file, by default, land in the purely private sharing circle of the internet rather than the completely public circle facebook and instagram provide.

I think what this really means is that both casual and professional photographers will have to think twice about posting their content on ‘free’ hosting services like instagram or facebook. There has always been a cost for using these services, they have just been hidden. It seems like this latest change will wake users up to these costs and redirect them to a service like ours. We have free accounts for casual users and very reasonably priced accounts for more professional users. But the bottom line is that our stance is private first. Share if you want, but unlike instagram users, you are in control of your data with a private file sending services like ours.

I would really reccommend you close your Instangram account today and join http://Drop.MX or any other file sending/sharing service for that matter. Send instagram a message that it’s not acceptable and there is line users won’t cross. I know most people won’t want their photos used against their will for commercial profits. Your trip to seattle or that quiet beach vacation was private and was not meant for a corporation to profit from. On Drop.MX we don’t share your info, keep detailed logs, or use your information against your will. If this move by instagram is accepted it will become the norm.

Our stance should be the default for any site that takes your data, it seems facebook and instagram may have pulled the wool over millions of users eyes. Don’t be fooled.
